In the beginning...
Locks Heath tennis courts were completed by Fareham Borough Council in 1978 after consultation with local residents who turned down a skate-board park in favour of the courts. FBC then invited local residents to set up a Club to run them. A meeting was convened in the Memorial Hall by Arthur Noote, a keen tennis player, and it was absolutely packed. When the meeting ended, a committee had been formed, with Arthur as our first Chairman. Liz Hawthorne, who is still a member, was elected Membership Secretary and Gina White was treasurer and who is also still a playing member. Her husband Terry became the second Chairman of the club, taking over from Arthur in 1982. Sadly, both Arthur and Terry are no longer with us, but both continued to play tennis at the club well into their senior years. Our current oldest playing member is also their 80’s, but we also have a large junior membership. Our coach, Roy Henderson, is a full member of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, that’s Wimbledon to you and me, and plays for Great Britain, and senior tennis at national level. He has been very successful over the years and is an experienced coach. The club currently has the most members of any club in the Fareham district, but we still have room for more.
